 The BSL Bible Translation Project was officially launched on Saturday 2nd September 2006 in Cardiff. Over 100 Deaf and hearing people attended the event, and had a chance to ask questions, give their opinions and sign up to get involved in different parts of the Project.
Media interest leading up to and following this event was very positive, with articles in a variety of Christian publications (including the Tablet and Baptist Union of Great Britain publications) and the Deaf media (an article in Sign Matters, via the RNID, via BID, a recent article in Go! Sign magazine and interest in a future item on the BBC’s See Hear among others).
During 2009, Sally Gallimore was out and about within the Deaf Community in Britain to explain what is happening within the Project. She visited the BDA (British Deaf Assoication) Conference in Gateshead, was present at the Open day at the City Lit in London, attended the DAT (Deaf Anglicans Together) AGM and the Deaf Catholics Conference in Bolton. Sally gave talks in various church meetings and also gave a talk as one of a series of the OPEN DOOR talks held in Nottingham Deaf Club.
In May 2009, Trudy Field who is the Chair of our Translation Sub Committee and Sally gave a presentation to the North East branch of ASLI (Association of Sign Language Interpreters). Our team would be happy to visit other groups to explain the work of the BSL Bible Translation Project.
Sally Gallimore our Strategic Development Officer attended a service of dedication at Westminister Abbey on behalf of BSL Bible in April 2009. She also had the opportunity to network with others who support the work of the 2011 Trust preparing to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James version of the English Bible.

 We have a number of individuals and groups who are supporting us financially on a regular basis since 2006. This is vital to our work. If you or your church would like to give to the BSL Bible Translation Project, please download one of our donation forms.
After a meeting with the Bible Society, in 2007, they invited us to create a business plan in order to discuss possible funding or opportunities for us to work with their organisation. We submitted this business plan and their initial response to this was to give us £10,000, and they will look into the possibility of further funding later. This is excellent news and it means we can make sure that the Project becomes established. The Bible Society continues to support us in other ways too.
We recieved ÂŁ30,000 from Spring Harvest in 2008, to enable us to employ a part time employee as Strategic Development Officer for 12 months and also to continue the work of the translation teams throughout 2009.Â

 We are currently testing our translation process in a pilot period. A team is meeting to translate parts of the Gospel of Mark, from the New Testament, into BSL and this is being filmed and monitored by Deaf people. We have the support of British and international academics and organisations who are offering us advice and consultancy.
We are asking experienced Deaf and hearing i nterpreters to translate these clips into English and then sending them to Bible experts to see if the translation is accurate in comparison with the original Greek text.
The clips will also be sent out to Deaf groups, for feedback about how comfortable and natural the sign language is to watch.
Once all this feedback has been received, we will re-visit the translation and change it if necessary.
We hope that this is a rigorous process and will mean that the finished translation will be accepted academically, as well as by the grassroots Deaf community. |

 New Pilot DVD Launches in May 2011.
The BSL Bible Translation Project team are delighted to announce the launch of our pilot DVD. This includes the first section of the Gospel of Mark (1:1-3:6), along with a glossary of terms (Messiah, Kingdom of God, etc), and an explanation of how we have actually done the translation work. Our aim is that it will be available from the 23rd of May.
We hope that people will watch the DVD and give us feedback on the work we have done so far. Feedback such as 'I wish you had included an explanation about ...., or 'I don't understand why you've used that sign' or any other comments which you think will help us as we continue to translate the rest of the Gospel of Mark.
To obtain your copy of the DVD, please send your cheque (payable to 'The BSL Bible Translation Project') to the project address: Flat 1, Thorne House, Wilmslow Rd, Manchester, M14 6DW. The DVD is £3 + £1 postage & packing.
The DVD will also be available directly from our team members at various Deaf events throughout the year. We will also be putting the Bible text and glossary on our website, later in 2011.
